Tallying up the most patents between 2000 and 2011, the Motor City was tenth with more than 25,000. Detroit led in 38 mostly automotive-related patent classes, including internal-combustion engines, land-vehicle bodies and tops, and vehicle navigation.
Silicon Valley topped with list, leading in semiconductors, networking, and artificial , TV and metalworking; followed by Portland, Oregon, leading in footwear; and Los Angeles, leading in movies and the medical industry.
Chicago also beat Detroit, leading in patent classes in various industries, including food.
